Amb. Jiang Feng, Head of China Mission to AU, meets with the UNEP Deputy Regional Director for Africa

On July 22, H.E. Ambassador Jiang Feng, Head of the Mission of the People's Republic of China to the African Union, met with Dr. Margaret Oduk, UNEP Deputy Regional Director for Africa and Head of UNEP Addis Ababa Liaison Office to the African Union, UNECA and representative to Ethiopia. Counsellor Zhai Dongsheng was present at the meeting.

Ambassador Jiang stated that China commends the vital role played by UNEP in advancing global environmental governance. Guided by the five pillars of the Global Governance Initiative, he emphasized China's commitment to strengthening cooperation and exchanges with UNEP to support Africa in achieving the goals of Agenda 2063 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He also briefed on the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, which was recently held in China.

Dr. Margaret expressed her appreciation for China's consistent and active implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. She congratulated China on the successful hosting of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and commended its efforts to enable 30 countries to use the AI-powered meteorological warning system, or MAZU. She expressed her willingness to deepen cooperation with China in areas including environmental governance and climate change.
