Minister Zhang Wei Visited African Union Counter-Terrorism Center

On September 10, Minister Zhang Wei, Deputy Head of Mission of China to the African Union, and his team paid a visit to the African Union Counter-Terrorism Center (AUCTC). Minister Zhang held discussions with the Center’s management team.

Minister Zhang underscored that peace and security are the cornerstone of development. He noted that the new leadership of the African Union Commission has put peace and security as its priority, and China stands ready to work with the AU side under the guidance of the four global initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping, including the latest Global Governance Initiative, to jointly implement the six-point proposition on China and Africa’s joint pursuit of modernization, ten partnership actions and zero-tariff measures, with a view to supporting African countries in addressing the root causes of terrorism. Minister Zhang also shared China’s successful experience in promoting comprehensive economic and social development through counter-terrorism efforts in Xinjiang.

The AU side briefed on the Center’s key areas of work and the current state of terrorism in Africa. They expressed appreciation for China’s approach to eliminate the breeding ground of terrorism, noting its strong alignment with the AU’s preventive counter-terrorism objectives, and looked forward to deepening exchanges and cooperation with China in the field of counter-terrorism.
